Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need sun protective clothing?

Suncream and normal clothes often do not provide you with sufficient sun protection, leaving you exposed to harmful UV radiation. Over exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause:

  • Sunburn
  • Premature ageing
  • Sun spots
  • Skin cancer, including melanoma
  • Irreversible skin damage

Equatorsun offers UPF 50+ sun protection clothing that has been rigorously tested. Our clothing has been shown to meet and exceed the Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399:1966; ensuring our clothing is sun-safe.

The UPF 50+ rating is equivalent to wearing a permanent layer of broad-spectrum SPF 50+ suncream, except you don't have the trouble of re-applying. So you can relax next time you are in the sun, knowing that you are protected.

What is UPF 50+ protection?

UPF 50+ is the highest rating for sun protection clothing. It means that the fabric blocks 98% of UV rays.

All of our apparel are certified UPF 50+ under the rigorous Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399:1966.

What makes this sunsuit ideal for sun protection?

This sunsuit provides full-body coverage with UPF 50+ sun protection, blocking over 97.5% of harmful UV rays. Specifically, this sunsuit protects you against both UVA and UVB rays during outdoor activities.

Do I need to wear suncream if I am wearing this sunsuit?

The sunsuit is the best form of protection due to its fantastic coverage and also its excellent UPF 50+ sun protection fabric, which significantly reduces the risk of sunburn. However, for maximum protection, it's still recommended to use suncream on exposed areas of skin that this sunsuit doesn’t cover.

Is this sunsuit suitable for water activities?

Yes, it's made with quick-drying, chlorine- and saltwater-resistant fabric, perfect for swimming, surfing, and water sports.

Is this sunsuit comfortable for long periods of wear?

Absolutely! The lightweight, breathable fabric ensures comfort and flexibility for extended wear during outdoor activities.

Is this sunsuit easy to put on and take off?

Yes, it has a simple, stretchy design that ensures easy wear and removal, providing a snug fit.

Can I wear this sunsuit under a wetsuit?

Yes, you can wear it underneath a wetsuit for added protection and comfort during water activities.

How should I care for my sunsuit?

Machine wash the sunsuit in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners. Hang to dry in the shade to maintain its colour and elasticity over time.

Is this sunsuit suitable for my condition?

This sunsuit is perfect for individuals requiring extra sun protection, particularly those with medical conditions that make them more susceptible to UV damage. It offers UPF 50+ sun protection, making it suitable for people with:

  • Skin cancers: Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma
  • Autoimmune diseases: Lupus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis
  • Medical treatments: Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunosuppressive therapies
  • Photosensitivity conditions: Actinic keratosis, porokeratosis, vitiligo, eczema, chronic actinic heliodermatitis
  • Genetic conditions: Erythropoietic protoporphyria, Bloom syndrome, ichthyoses

What sets UPF 50+ swimwear apart from regular swimwear?

Our UPF 50+ swimwear offers superior protection by blocking over 97.5% of harmful UV rays, unlike regular swimwear, which often provides little or no UV defence. Standard fabrics may let UV rays penetrate, leading to sunburn and long-term skin damage. In contrast, our UPF 50+ swimwear provides a level of UV protection that is certified and ensures safe exposure during outdoor activities.

In 2009, Annette lost her life, leaving behind, sadly amongst many other things, a mission to prevent skin cancer. My family have committed to carrying-on her legacy through Equatorsun.
