How to choose a baby sunsuit

Every sunsuit covers the body in one piece. Choose by how much of the arms and legs you want covered, and how easy it needs to be to change.

Coverage A full-body sunsuit covers the most, from the neck to the wrists and feet, for long days on the beach. A short sleeve sunsuit covers less and is the coolest for a hot garden, with the arms and lower legs free.

Sizes Baby sizes run 0 to 6 and 6 to 12 months in the short sleeve sunsuit and 0 to 9 and 9 to 18 months in the full-body sunsuit. Toddler sunsuits come in 12 to 18 months and 2 years.

What is a sunsuit?

A sunsuit is an all-in-one swimsuit for babies and toddlers made from fabric that has been tested and rated UPF 50+, so it blocks at least 98% of UV rays from the skin it covers. It covers the body and thighs in one piece, with short sleeves, long sleeves or a full-body cut to the wrists and feet, and it is swimwear, so it goes in the pool and the sea and dries in minutes. Other names for it are UV suit, sun suit and all-in-one UV swimsuit.

What should a baby wear in the swimming pool?

A swim nappy, with a sunsuit or a swim top over it. Indoors, the sunsuit is for warmth and modesty and most pools ask for a swim nappy underneath. Outdoors, it is the sun protection: a UPF 50+ sunsuit keeps the shoulders, back and tummy covered through a lesson in the sun, where sun cream washes off in minutes. Add a legionnaire cap for the head and neck.

What should a 3 month old wear swimming?

A swim nappy and a soft, quick-drying sunsuit in a 0 to 6 month size, and as little time in direct sun as possible. Babies under 6 months should be kept in the shade rather than relying on sun cream, so the sunsuit and a legionnaire cap do the covering and the pram or parasol does the rest. Does a sunsuit go over a swim nappy?

Yes. Put the swim nappy on first and the sunsuit over it, the same as a normal swimsuit. For quick changes, the toddler two-piece set separates at the waist, so the top stays on while the swim nappy comes off.
