Do sun hats need to be UPF 50+?

For best sun protection, yes. UPF 50+ means the fabric has been tested to block at least 98% of UV rays. A hat made from an untested straw weave or thin cotton can let a lot of UV through to your scalp and face even though it may cast a shadow. Every equatorsun hat is made from certified UPF 50+ fabric, tested to the AS/NZS 4399 or EN 13758 standard.

What type of sun hat gives the most protection?

A hat with a brim and a neck flap gives the most protection, because it shades the face and ears and covers the back and sides of the neck, which are the places sun cream is most often missed. A wide brim of at least 7.5 cm all the way round provides excellent sun protection for the face, ears and the back of the neck.

Do I need sun cream if I’m wearing a hat?

Ideally yes. A UPF 50+ hat protects the scalp, ears, face and neck, but a brim only blocks the sun from above. UV can reflect up off sand, water, snow and pale paving, so your face still gets UV from below even in the shade of a hat. The best protection is both: a hat with a wide brim or neck flap for the parts it covers, plus sun cream on your face, lips and any skin that’s still showing.

What size sun hat do I need?

Hats are sized by head circumference. Most of our women's hats fit 55 to 65 cm. Check the size guide on the product page, because sizing varies between styles and brands.
