Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need sun protective clothing?
Suncream and normal clothes often do not provide you with sufficient sun protection, leaving you exposed to harmful UV radiation. Over exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause:
- Sunburn
- Premature ageing
- Sun spots
- Skin cancer, including melanoma
- Irreversible skin damage
Equatorsun offers UPF 50+ sun protection clothing that has been rigorously tested. Our clothing has been shown to meet and exceed the Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399:1966; ensuring our clothing is sun-safe.
The UPF 50+ rating is equivalent to wearing a permanent layer of broad-spectrum SPF 50+ suncream, except you don't have the trouble of re-applying. So you can relax next time you are in the sun, knowing that you are protected.
What is UPF 50+ protection?
UPF 50+ is the highest rating for sun protection clothing. It means that the fabric blocks 98% of UV rays.
All of our apparel are certified UPF 50+ under the rigorous Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399:1966.
Should I still apply suncream to my toddler's face if they’re wearing this cap?
Yes, for the best protection, it's recommended to apply suncream to your toddler's face even when they’re wearing this hat. While the Legionnaire's cap provides excellent UPF 50+ sun protection for the head and neck, suncream ensures full protection from any reflected UV rays.
Is this cap comfortable for all-day wear?
Yes, it’s made from lightweight, breathable, and chlorine-resistant fabric to ensure comfort during long outdoor activities. The adjustable drawstring ensures a secure fit, even on windy days.
Can this cap be used for water activities?
Absolutely! The fabric is resistant to saltwater and chlorine, making it perfect for swimming or beach outings while offering consistent sun protection.
Is this cap suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, the cap is created with soft, skin-friendly materials that are gentle on children with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema.
How do I care for the cap?
Simply rinse with fresh water after use, especially after exposure to salt or chlorine, and let it air dry. The quick-drying fabric ensures it’s ready for your toddler's next adventure!
What sets UPF 50+ clothing apart from regular clothing?
Our UPF 50+ clothing offers superior protection by blocking over 97.5% of harmful UV rays, unlike regular clothing, which often provides little or no UV defence. Standard fabrics may let UV rays penetrate, leading to sunburn and long-term skin damage. In contrast, our UPF 50+ clothing and swimwear provides a level of UV protection that is certified and ensures safe exposure during outdoor activities.

Our Story
Over 15 years ago, my mother, Annette founded Equatorsun shortly after receiving a melanoma diagnosis. After a few years, Equatorsun was blossoming, and at the same time Annette was struggling with melanoma. In 2009, Annette lost her life, leaving behind, sadly amongst many other things, a mission to prevent skin cancer. My family have committed to carrying-on her legacy through Equatorsun.
