“UPF clothing is an essential part of any sun protection strategy. It offers consistent coverage and long-term UV defence, especially for those at higher risk of skin cancer. equatorsun helps make that protection both effective and practical.”
Common questions about men's legionnaire hats
What is a legionnaire hat?
A legionnaire hat is a cap with a peak at the front and a flap of fabric that hangs down over the back and sides of the neck. In certified UPF 50+ fabric it blocks at least 98% of UV from the scalp, ears and neck, the three places men often burn first. The equatorsun legionnaire cap is chlorine-resistant swim fabric with an elasticated fit and a drawstring, so it stays on in wind and water.
Why are they called legionnaire hats?
They are named after the French Foreign Legion, whose soldiers wore a white cap with a cloth flap, the kepi blanc, to keep the desert sun off their necks in North Africa in the 1800s. The design has not needed improving since: a peak for the eyes and a flap for the neck. Modern legionnaire hats swap the cotton for quick-drying UPF 50+ fabric.
Can I swim in one?
Yes. The legionnaire cap is made from chlorine-resistant swim fabric with an elasticated fit and an adjustable drawstring, so it will stay on when you swim, snorkel or fall off a board, and they dry in minutes afterwards. Rinse them in cold water after the pool or the sea.
Why choose equatorsun for men's legionnaire hats?
Ordinary caps are rarely tested for UV and they can let through up to 10 times more UV than UPF 50+ caps. Every equatorsun piece is tested to the AS/NZS 4399 or EN 13758 standard and certified UPF 50+, which means the fabric blocks at least 98% of UVA and UVB rays from reaching the skin it covers. Leading UK consultant dermatologist Dr Dev Shah recommends the equatorsun range. We're a UK family business and have specialised in sun protective clothing since 2006.
