Do kids need a rash vest?
Rash vests are widely recommended for sun protection and comfort for children. A rash vest covers the shoulders, back and chest, the places children often burn first in the water. It also stops sand and board rash, takes the chill off a breezy beach, and goes on in seconds, so there is far less SPF to apply and reapply.
Is a rash vest worth it, or is a t-shirt enough?
A UPF 50+ rash vest lets through up to 10 times less UV than ordinary t-shirts. An ordinary t-shirt is not tested for UV, goes heavy and cold in the water and can let a third of the UV through once wet. A rash vest is made from swim fabric: it blocks at least 98% of UV rays wet or dry, dries in minutes and does not drag when they swim.
Does a rash vest keep kids warm?
A little. The fabric is thin and not made of wetsuit material, but covering the shoulders and back keeps the wind off wet skin, which is what makes children shiver on a beach.
Can kids wear a rash vest in the swimming pool?
Yes. Pools most often allow close-fitting swim tops, and the chlorine-resistant fabric keeps its colour and shape through weekly lessons. Outdoor pools and lidos are where it is especially important to wear a rash vest, because an hour of swimming lessons in the sun can easily burn young skin.
