Less than 1 in 50 UV rays reach the skin
That is what UPF 50+ means, tested and certified to the Australian standard AS/NZS 4399:1996. Many ordinary legionnaire hats give shade but let UV through the fabric, especially lighter or loosely woven ones.
Here the protection is woven into the fibre and weave rather than a chemical finish, and it holds its rating when wet.
Shade at the front, cover at the back
A legionnaire cap with neck flap: the peak shades your face, and the flap hangs from ear to ear round the back, down the full length of your neck.
Made for swims, walks and runs
It is as useful in the water as on a walk or a run, and works as a legionnaire hat for hiking. The fabric resists chlorine and saltwater and keeps its full UPF 50+ rating wet.

What customers ask us
What is a legionnaire hat?
A peaked cap with a fabric flap at the back. The peak shades your face and the flap covers your neck. On this cap the flap reaches from ear to ear, so it covers the sides of your neck as well as the back, all the way down.
What head sizes does the adult legionnaire cap fit?
One size fits heads from 58 to 65 cm. Measure around your head just above the ears to check.
Will the legionnaire cap stay on when it is windy?
Yes. The elastic holds it round your head, and the adjustable chin cord tightens under your chin, so it stays on in the wind and in the water.
Is the legionnaire cap chlorine resistant and quick drying?
Yes to both. The fabric resists chlorine and saltwater, dries quickly and keeps its full UPF 50+ rating when wet, so you can swim in it. It is cooling and breathable too, and as useful on a run as it is in the water.
How do I wash the cap after swimming?
Rinse it in clean water to get rid of salt or chlorine. For a full wash, machine wash it cold on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent and no bleach or fabric softener, then air dry it flat or hang it in the shade. The UV protection is woven into the fibre and weave rather than a chemical finish, so it won't wash off or fade.
Do I still need suncream?
Not on your scalp or the back and sides of your neck. Use it on your face, which the peak shades but does not cover, on the front of your neck and on any other skin your clothes leave bare, and reapply after swimming.
Is it suitable if I have had skin cancer or have a medical condition?
Yes. Certified UPF 50+ cover is often recommended after skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, and for autoimmune conditions such as lupus, scleroderma and dermatomyositis, photosensitivity conditions such as actinic keratosis and vitiligo, genetic conditions such as EPP, ichthyoses and Bloom syndrome, and during chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunosuppressive treatment. We cannot give medical advice, so follow your dermatologist or consultant on how much cover you need.
