Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my child need sun protective clothing?
Suncream and normal clothes often do not provide your child with sufficient sun protection, leaving your child exposed to harmful UV radiation. Over exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause:
- Sunburn
- Premature ageing
- Sun spots
- Skin cancer, including melanoma
- Irreversible skin damage
Equatorsun offers UPF 50+ sun protection clothing that has been rigorously tested. Our clothing has been shown to meet and exceed the Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399:1966; ensuring our clothing is sun-safe.
The UPF 50+ rating is equivalent to wearing a permanent layer of broad-spectrum SPF 50+ suncream, except you don't have the trouble of re-applying. So you can relax the next time your child is in the sun, knowing that your child is protected.
What is UPF 50+ protection?
UPF 50+ is the highest rating for sun protection clothing. It means that the fabric blocks 98% of UV rays.
All of our apparel are certified UPF 50+ under the rigorous Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399:1966
Should I still apply suncream to my child's face if they’re wearing this hat?
Yes, for the best protection, it's recommended to apply suncream to your child's face even when they’re wearing this hat. While the Kids' Cricket Hat provides excellent UPF 50+ sun protection for the head and neck, suncream ensures full protection from any reflected UV rays.
Can this hat be packed easily for travel?
Yes! The Kids' Cricket Hat is compact and foldable, making it convenient for travel and family outings.
What activities is this hat best suited for?
This versatile cricket hat is ideal for activities like playing at the park, beach outings, sports, hiking, and any other sunny-day adventures.
How can I wash it?
To ensure longevity, machine wash the hat in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners. Hang or to dry in the shade to maintain its colour and elasticity over time.
Is this suitable for my child's condition?
It is perfect for children requiring extra sun protection, particularly those with medical conditions that make them more susceptible to UV damage. It offers UPF 50+ sun protection, making it suitable for children with:
- Skin cancers: Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma
- Autoimmune diseases: Lupus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis
- Medical treatments: Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunosuppressive therapies
- Photosensitivity conditions: Actinic keratosis, porokeratosis, vitiligo, eczema, chronic actinic heliodermatitis
- Genetic conditions: Erythropoietic protoporphyria, Bloom syndrome, ichthyoses
This is designed to offer robust sun protection, providing peace of mind to parents with children.
What sets UPF 50+ hats apart from regular hats?
Our UPF 50+ sun hats offer superior protection by blocking over 97.5% of harmful UV rays, unlike regular sun hats, which often provides little or no UV defence. Standard fabrics may let UV rays penetrate, leading to sunburn and long-term skin damage. In contrast, our UPF 50+ sun hats provide a level of UV protection that is certified and ensures safe exposure during outdoor activities.

Our Story
Over 15 years ago, my mother, Annette founded Equatorsun shortly after receiving a melanoma diagnosis. After a few years, Equatorsun was blossoming, and at the same time Annette was struggling with melanoma. In 2009, Annette lost her life, leaving behind, sadly amongst many other things, a mission to prevent skin cancer. My family have committed to carrying-on her legacy through Equatorsun.
