Description
A kids' legionnaire cap with a peaked front and a UPF 50+ neck flap, so the ears and the back and sides of the neck stay covered. Those are the places suncream almost always gets missed, and where children often burn. The certified UPF 50+ fabric blocks 98% of UVA and UVB rays, and because the protection is woven into the fibre and the weave rather than applied as a finish, it can't wash out or wear off.
An adjustable drawstring keeps it on in wind and water, and the fabric resists chlorine and saltwater and dries quickly, so it works at the pool and the beach as well as the park. Two sizes, 2 to 4 years and 6 to 12 years, in eighteen colourways for boys and girls.

That is what UPF 50+ means, tested and certified to the Australian standard AS/NZS 4399:2020. An ordinary sun hat puts the face in a shadow, but it isn't necessarily providing adequate protection.
The protection is woven in, from the fibres and the density of the weave rather than a chemical finish, so there is nothing to wash out and nothing to reapply.

Two sizes, both adjustable
The 45 cm size fits most toddlers and pre-schoolers; the 51 cm fits school-age children. Measure just above the ears, and between the two sizes take the larger: the drawstring draws the fit in, so a cap can be made smaller but never bigger.

What is a legionnaire cap?
A legionnaire cap is a sun hat with a peaked front, like a cap, and a long fabric flap at the back that covers the ears and the back and sides of the neck. It gives more neck coverage than most normal caps.
Does my child still need suncream if they wear it?
Yes, on the skin the cap does not cover. The cap takes care of the scalp, ears and the back and sides of the neck. Carry on with suncream on the face, nose, hands and feet, reapplied after swimming, because UV also reflects up off sand and water.
Will it stay on?
Yes. The drawstring at the back sets the fit to your child's head and holds through wind, swimming and full-speed play. It sits close to the head rather than catching the wind like a wide brim.
Can they swim in it?
Yes. The fabric resists chlorine and saltwater, keeps its full UPF 50+ rating when wet, and dries quickly.
Which size should I choose?
Measure around your child's head just above the ears: 45 cm is 2 to 4 years, 51 cm is 6 to 12 years. Between the two, take the larger: the drawstring draws the fit in.
Will the UV protection wash out?
No. It comes from the fibres and the density of the weave, not a chemical coating, so there is nothing to wash out or wear off. Rinse in fresh water after the pool or the sea, air dry, and machine wash cold on a gentle cycle when it needs it.
Is it suitable for eczema, sensitive skin or a child who cannot be in the sun?
Yes. The fabric is smooth, seam-light and carries no chemical UV finish, which is why it suits eczema and sensitive skin. Parents also buy it for children with photosensitivity conditions such as vitiligo and actinic keratosis, autoimmune conditions such as lupus, scleroderma and dermatomyositis, genetic conditions such as EPP, ichthyoses and Bloom syndrome, and children going through chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunosuppressive treatment.
